[I] fly with the stars in the skies, I am no longer trying to survive, I believe that life is a prize, But to live doesn’t mean you’re alive, Don’t worry ‘bout me and who I fire, I get what I desire it’s my empire, And yes I call the shots I am the umpire, I sprinkle holy water upon the vampire, In this very moment I’m king! – Nicki Minaj “Moment For Life”As women we have to be dynamic, loud, and cut-throat to be noticed by our male counterparts. What are we proving, that we can be one of them? Why? Because HE said so? I can remember my parents’ chant throughout my adolescent into adulthood, “go to college, get a job, work harder, be better, don’t give up and be strong.” This all sounds like great advice, right? WRONG! We are creatures of habit and that means for most of us, we’ve fallen back in the cycle of brainwashed corporate zombies who judge us by our natural hair, the way we speak and the education we have under your belt. But what if there was one person who can show you differently? Would you listen, learn and implement?
All of my women role models until this point have been burning the candle at both ends trying to balance home life and their corporate careers, while competing for the next VP spot. Have you heard the “she looks tired today,” comment? Or maybe you heard, “she lost her edge after having that baby.” And then there’s the, “too much on your plate,” comment. From impromptu conference calls to football and cheerleading, we split hairs and never let them see us sweat. But we did it, we got our promotion with our performance increase that says how much they are willing to pay for our sleepless nights, 65-hour work weeks, missed recitals, higher education degrees, passed-on dinners with our husbands, and unused vacation time. We’ve been raising our kids from the office, face-timing first steps, and doing homework on our commute. Motherhood is sacrificed unnoticed because no one truly understands our blood sweat and tears but us.
How much MORE are we willing to give up? Well, I’ve had enough. Sweet 16 dances are coming, proms, first loves, and first heartbreaks; I want to be there for it all. So, I refuse to wait any longer for someone to hand me a title; I’m going to take it! “At this very moment I’m king,” Nicki Minaj. I am claiming my crown and becoming my own Mommy Boss. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. It’s time…Be True To Your Hue!
